Types of SAP Projects
In this blog, we’ll delve into each project concept, illustrating key points with relatable, real-world examples to facilitate deeper understanding and practical application.
Throughout the entire project lifecycle, key parties including consultants and end-users will be actively engaged and collaborated to ensure successful delivery.
- Consultant: Who is responsible for offering technical/functional assistance and guidance to the end-user. This could be a consultant, IT specialist, or support engineer from a third-party vendor, such as TCS, Accenture, or IBM.
- End user/Core team member: This refers to a key stakeholder from the business side who possesses in-depth knowledge of the organization’s operations, processes, and requirements. They are responsible for articulating and communicating specific business needs and objectives to the consultant, who will then implement the necessary solutions in SAP.
Types of SAP Projects
- Implementation project
- Support project
- Rollout project
- Conversion/upgradation/Migration
1. Implementation Project:
- Greenfield Implementation:
The business is currently utilizing non-SAP systems to manage its business operations. Following extensive discussions among the leadership team, a strategic decision has been made to migrate to SAP S/4HANA (This process is called as Greenfield implementation), paving the way for enhanced efficiency, streamlined processes, and improved business outcomes.

- Brownfield Implementation:
The company is currently leveraging SAP ECC, an earlier version of SAP, to manage its business operations. As part of its digital transformation strategy, the business is now planning to upgrade to SAP S/4HANA, a project known as a Brownfield implementation, which will enable the company to harness the latest innovations, improve business processes, and drive greater efficiency.

- Bluefield Implementation:
Bluefield Implementation is a mixture of Greenfield and Brownfield implementation (kind of hybrid approach).
It involves introducing a new SAP system while selectively migrating relevant data from the existing system, and rolling it out in phases to ensure a gradual transition. The existing system runs in parallel with the new SAP system during the transition period, minimizing disruption to business operations. This approach reduces risk, lowers costs and efforts for data migration, and improves data quality, while also enabling faster implementation and rollout, and enhancing flexibility and scalability.
2. Support Project:
- Normal support project: In a support project, consultants provide assistance to end-users, resolving issues, errors encountered and assisting in change requests, etc.. within the SAP system. Now, all support requests are managed and tracked through a ticketing tool, such as ServiceNow, JIRA etc., ensuring efficient issue resolution and effective monitoring.
- Hypercare support: Following the completion of an implementation project, hyper care support provides intensive, immediate assistance (issues, errors encountered and assisting in change requests, etc..) to the end-user team, typically for a period of 1-3 months. After this phase, the business will determine the ongoing support arrangement, choosing either to continue with the existing support team or transition to a new support provider.
3. Rollout Project
Let us talk this concept with a basic example: SAP system implemented 3 years ago for 5 countries (e.g., USA, Canada, Mexico, UK, and Germany). Now business is planning to Expand the existing SAP system to 5 additional countries (e.g., France, Australia, Japan, China, and India). So now configure and deploy the with minimal disruption to existing operations
4. Conversion/upgradation/Migration
When any Business using non-SAP or SAP ECC systems are now planning to migrate to SAP S/4HANA. Therefore, all configurations and developments must be completed before the conversion begins. Once the S/4HANA system is fully developed, we can proceed with migrating master and transactional data with the help of “Migration cockpit” tool.
